You Don't Need a Career Plan. You Need This First.

If you're reading this at 11pm after a shift you didn't want to go to, this is for you.

The advice that makes it worse

Most career advice starts in the same place: the resume.

Update your LinkedIn. Apply to more jobs. Go back to school. Figure out what you want to do — and then go do it.

But here's the problem. If you don't know what you actually want, all of that advice just adds pressure. It doesn't add clarity.

You end up scrolling job listings you don't want, feeling worse than when you started.

What actually helps

Before the resume. Before the job search. Before any of that —

Start with yourself.

I know that sounds abstract. Bear with me.

Most people feel stuck not because they lack options, but because they've never stopped to ask the right questions. Not "what job should I get" — but:

  • What actually drains me at the end of the day?

  • What do I do that feels almost too easy — but other people seem to struggle with?

  • What would I want more of in my daily life, if nobody was judging the answer?

These aren't soft questions. They're the starting point for everything.

When you know what drains you, you stop chasing jobs that will burn you out. When you can name your actual strengths — the ones from real life, not a resume — you start seeing options you didn't know were available to you. When you know what your life needs to feel like, you have a compass instead of a list.

A simpler way to start

You don't need a career coach or a 30-page workbook to do this.

Try this tonight, right now, in your notes app:

Finish these sentences:

  • I feel most like myself when I'm...

  • I feel most drained when I'm...

  • I want more of...

  • I want less of...

  • If I'm honest, I keep thinking about...

That's it. No judgment. No right answer.

If you can only answer one, answer the second one. Drain is information. Most people are so focused on what they should want that they've never stopped to notice what's actually exhausting them — and why.

The thing nobody tells you

Clarity doesn't come from thinking harder.

It comes from noticing patterns — and giving yourself permission to take them seriously.

The job that keeps pulling at your attention. The thing people always ask you for help with. The environment where you feel like yourself versus the one where you feel like you're performing.

Those aren't random. They're data.

Once you can see your own patterns clearly, the next step gets a lot less scary. Not because you have it all figured out — but because you're moving from yourself, instead of from pressure.

This is where we start at YNS

At Your Next Step, we don't open with the resume either.

We start exactly here — with who you are, what you actually want, and what makes sense for your life. Before we talk about college vs. certificates vs. jobs. Before we build anything.

Because you can't figure out where you're going until you know where you're starting from.

If you're ready to take that first step — without the pressure to have it all figured out —

It costs less than a coffee. And you can start tonight.

Your Next Step was built for people who are figuring it out. You're exactly who we had in mind.
